What is the Healthy Back Program?

The Healthy Back Workout at Back2Strength is a research-based exercise program specially designed for people with chronic back pain. Let us explain…

Chronic back pain is a very expensive and prevalent problem in the United States.  More people visit their doctor for low-back pain symptoms than any other reason except for the common cold. Treatment often consist of pain medication and instructions to stretch and “take it easy” for awhile. But what happens if the pain persists or comes and goes on a regular basis? What do you do then?

People with chronic back pain want to know why they have this pain. What is causing the ongoing symptoms? And what can they do to get rid of it? A good portion of available treatments are designed to treat the symptoms, to make you feel better but often do not get to the underlying cause of the pain.

One man, Arthur Jones (inventor of Nautilus equipment), suggested that the root cause of chronic back pain may be related to muscle weakness and developed a machine that provided a valid and repeatable means to test the strength of the lower back musculature. The first research on this machine was conducted at the University of Florida’s College of Medicine under the supervision of Exercise Physiologist Michael Pollock Ph.D., the past President of the American College of Sports Medicine. The initial research conducted by Dr. Pollock compared healthy back strength to patients with chronic back pain. The results were dramatically clear – people with chronic back pain were significantly weaker than the people who had no pain.

Next, the researchers tested what effect strengthening these underdeveloped muscles would have on the painful symptoms. Again, the results were very clear and, in many cases, almost unbelievable for the patients.  About 80% of the patients with chronic back pain rated the muscle strengthening treatment as providing excellent or good results.  These were patients who had tried and failed many other treatments (average of 6), including “supervised exercise,” with little or no success.

The early success of this new approach to treat chronic back pain was promising and other researchers worldwide soon followed with their own studies. Over 50 published studies confirmed the fact that most chronic back pain could be significantly reduced or eliminated by strengthening the muscles of the lumbar spine (called the multifidi) using the MedX Lumbar Spine machine developed by Arthur Jones.

A quick note/reminder about exercising outside after surrounding forest fire smoke fills the air.....is it safe and without potential consequence??
The higher the level of warning or level of particles in the air, the higher the chance of irritation you may experience (sinus, throat, cough, eye, respiratory irritation). These will be exacerbated if you have any risk factors or pre-existing conditions like heart or lung disease, asthma or allergies.
If you do run when you smell smoke you risk respiratory irritation. When you run, you breathe faster and more deeply taking in fine particles deeper into your lungs. During exercise, people can increase their air intake as much as 10 to 20 times over their resting level. Increased breathing rates bring more pollution deep into the lungs.
