Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: I have tried physical therapy in the past with very little success. Is this physical therapy?

A: The Healthy Back Workout is different because it incorporates the use of the MedX Lumbar Spine machine. No other facility in Lane County has this equipment.

What makes the MedX machine unique is its ability to:

1)  Isolate the spinal muscles by means of a patented pelvic restraint system.

2)  Accurately test the spinal muscles to determine if they are weak.

3)  Provides a laser-like focus directly to the deep spinal muscles (multifidi).  This progressive strengthening of the muscles has a profound effect to relieve or eliminate symptoms, improve your ability to function normally, and act as a safeguard to prevent injury.

Finally, the Healthy Back Workout requires your active participation. It requires effort and a willingness to want to work hard to achieve your goals. The emphasis of the program is to develop a strong, healthy and pain-free back as quickly as possible through the use of progressive resistance exercise.

Q: How do I know if the Healthy Back Workout is right for me?

A: Before you begin our program, you must have a diagnostic strength and flexibility test on the MedX Lumbar Spine machine. This requires about one hour and involves a full consultation and the diagnostic test, providing strength and flexibility comparisons to normative data for gender, age and weight. You will be given print-outs of the reports, the results of which will be fully explained to you at the end of the session. The information obtained by the testing will determine if you are a suitable candidate for the Healthy Back Workout program.

Q: What conditions have been helped by the Healthy Back Workout?

A: Painful conditions that the Healthy Back Workout has successfully treated include:

1. bulging or herniated discs
2. sciatic nerve pain
3. sprains and strains
4. degenerative disc disease/degenerative joint disease
5. spondylolisthesis/spinal instability
6. osteoarthritis
7. stenosis
8. pre and post surgical conditioning/fitness
9. non-specific back, hip and/or leg pain

Q: I am very active, exercise at the gym, and am in good shape but my back still hurts all the time.  How do I know if the Healthy Back Workout is right for me?

A: Many of the chronic back pain patients who found success with the Healthy Back Workout were in great shape and very active. Some had tried multiple other therapies including exercise programs at home, the gym or other health care facilities. Interestingly, when these patients are tested on the MedX Lumbar Spine machine they almost always exhibit significant weakness of their spinal musculature. This indicates the exercise programs did not strengthen the spinal muscles to the degree necessary to relieve symptoms. So we advise people to test the strength of these critical spinal muscles to better determine if they are a candidate for the Healthy Back Workout.

Q: How does a back or neck get weak?

A: Whenever a person injures their back, they tend to take it easy.  Due to the pain, they begin to utilize other body parts and muscles as a substitute and therefore the back/neck do not get used as much. This happens involuntarily. When the muscles are not used, they lose strength and become deconditioned (atrophied). In addition, if the back and neck are not continually moved, they become stiff.  It is well-known that joints that are not moved will deteriorate.  Think of a leg in a cast — when the cast is taken off, the leg is usually shrunken and weak and the knee is very stiff. This deterioration comes from disuse.  The same thing happens with the back and neck musculature. With each new episode, the spine loses a bit more strength and the cycle repeats itself.

Q: Once I complete the Healthy Back Workout, won’t my muscles become weak again if I don’t continue doing the exercises?

A: Not necessarily. Remember, we are strengthening weak spinal muscles and bringing them up to normal levels of strength. Once those muscles are “Back2strength,” or of normal strength, they tend to stay at that level. However, we recommend for best results that a regular maintenance schedule of once or twice a month be followed for a period of time.

Q: Can the Healthy Back Workout prevent a back surgery?

A: This depends on what your condition is and how motivated you are to avoid surgery. Many back pain sufferers who were told they needed surgery were able to avoid surgery after completing the Healthy Back Workout.  In one published study, 35 out of 38 surgical candidates were able to avoid surgery after completing a similar Healthy Back Workout program on the MedX Lumbar Spine machine.

A quick note/reminder about exercising outside after surrounding forest fire smoke fills the air.....is it safe and without potential consequence??
The higher the level of warning or level of particles in the air, the higher the chance of irritation you may experience (sinus, throat, cough, eye, respiratory irritation). These will be exacerbated if you have any risk factors or pre-existing conditions like heart or lung disease, asthma or allergies.
If you do run when you smell smoke you risk respiratory irritation. When you run, you breathe faster and more deeply taking in fine particles deeper into your lungs. During exercise, people can increase their air intake as much as 10 to 20 times over their resting level. Increased breathing rates bring more pollution deep into the lungs.
- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

*Be smart out there running if the smoke covers town again.......a safe alternative would be to strength train or run in doors!
